It is a pleasure and honour to welcome our colleagues and friends to the first website on public health in Malta set up by the Malta Association of Public Health Medicine. This site contains valuable information to all members, other professions and anyone who may be interested in the public health profession and public health issues.

Dear friends, It is a great honour and satisfaction to be writing the first editorial for the new website. This moment is indeed a culmination of many years of hard work by all our colleagues, past and present members of the Malta Association of Public Health Medicine (MAPHM), to which heartfelt thanks are due.

In view of the current global threat posed by the novel (swine) influenza A(H1N1) virus that the World Health Organisation has raised to pandemic phase V status last night, the MAPHM would like to stress the public health significance of the current situation, since human to human spread of this virus is now widespread indicating that a pandemic could be imminent.
